Amarillo & Route 66

When to go to Amarillo

Spring and autumn are the best seasons. Summer is hot but dry, and winter can be bitter.

At about 3,600 feet, Amarillo is breezy and cooler than most of Texas, and summer nights are comfortable. The wind is the constant companion.

Season by season

Spring (Mar–May)

Mild days and green plains, but this is also storm season. Tornado watches, hail and strong wind are possible, particularly in May.

Summer (Jun–Aug)

Hot afternoons around 32–33 °C (about 90 °F), low humidity and evening thunderstorms. It is the busiest time for Route 66 travellers.

Autumn (Sep–Nov)

Clear skies, cooler air and the best hiking weather. Our favourite time to visit.

Winter (Dec–Feb)

Often sunny but cold, with biting wind and occasional snow or ice that can close I-40.
