Red layered canyon walls in Palo Duro Canyon

When to go to the Texas Panhandle

April to May and September to October are best, though every season has its appeal.

Expect sun, wind and big swings in temperature. The canyons are much hotter than the plains in summer, and the high north is colder in winter.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month overall?

October, with May a close second if you can accept the risk of storms.

Does it snow?

Yes, a few times each winter, sometimes heavily, though it usually melts quickly.

Is summer too hot?

Not on the plains, where nights are cool. Canyon hikes need a very early start.
