The sites are scattered along Highway 136 and side roads. Start at the park’s visitor information point in Fritch for current conditions.
1 Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument
A steep walk climbs a mesa to pits dug by hand over thousands of years. Tools made of this flint have been found far beyond the Panhandle. Rangers bring the place to life.
Practical: Ranger tours only, usually around 2 hours with a climb. Reserve in advance; tours are free.
2 Alibates flint
Bands of red, purple, white and grey make this agatized dolomite instantly recognisable. Look down as you walk, but leave everything where you find it.
Practical: Protected: no collecting.
3 McBride Canyon
A quiet corner of the recreation area, with mesquite, bluffs and birdlife. A good spot for a picnic and a short walk.
Practical: Rough access roads may need care after rain.
4 The lake shore
Open water below red cliffs is a rare sight in this part of Texas. Boaters, anglers and campers use several sites, depending on the water level.
Practical: Check the NPS site for ramp status and any water-quality notices.
5 Canadian River breaks
Above and below the dam, the river has carved a wide, rough valley through the plains. The views from Highway 136 are some of the region’s best.
Practical: Free. Pull over only where it is safe.
