Where to base yourself
Amarillo has the most choice. Borger is closest for hotels. Fritch has basic services. Park campgrounds are simple and first come, first served at most sites: check before you travel.
Water levels
Drought has left Lake Meredith very low at times, closing ramps and cutting boating. Levels recover after wet years. Do not plan a boating holiday without checking first.
History
The Antelope Creek people built stone villages here around 700 years ago and traded Alibates flint widely. The later oil boom created Borger almost overnight in the 1920s.
Safety
Rattlesnakes live in the rocks, so watch your step. Summer sun is strong and there is little shade; bring water and a hat.
Sample plans
