Red cliffs of Haynes Ridge in Caprock Canyons State Park
The canyons

Caprock Canyons travel guide

A remote park that rewards preparation.

Bison safety

Bison are wild, weigh up to a ton and can charge without warning. Never approach one for a photo. If one is on the trail, give it a very wide berth or turn back.

Where to base yourself

Camping in the park is the classic choice, from primitive sites to water and electric hook-ups. Reserve well ahead for spring and autumn. Otherwise, consider the hotels of Canyon or Lubbock.

Water and supplies

Trail water is unsafe; much of it is gypsum-rich. Bring all your water and food, and top up fuel in larger towns. Shop hours in Quitaque can be short.

Nearby: Turkey

A short drive east, the town of Turkey celebrates western-swing star Bob Wills with a small museum and an annual festival in April.

Sample plans

One day

Drive in early, watch the bison, walk a short section around Lake Theo and visit the prairie dog town.

Two days

Camp overnight, hike Haynes Ridge at dawn and walk or cycle a section of the Trailway.

Am I guaranteed to see bison?

Nothing is guaranteed in the wild, but most visitors see them, often near the road or campgrounds.

Palo Duro or Caprock?

Palo Duro is bigger and easier to reach; Caprock is wilder, with the bison. Do both if you can.

Are there hotels nearby?

Very few. Camping or a base in Canyon or Lubbock are the usual options.

We found none on GetYourGuide. This is a place to explore on your own.
