Palo Duro Canyon & Canyon travel guide

How to hike safely, where to sleep and how to fill a day or two.

Heat safety

The canyon floor is often noticeably hotter than Amarillo. Summer rescues are a real issue here. Carry more water than you think you need, wear a hat, start at dawn and turn back early. Dogs should not walk these trails on hot days.

Where to base yourself

In the park, campsites and a few historic CCC cabins sell out early. Canyon has chain hotels and a pleasant courthouse square. Amarillo has the most choice but adds half an hour each way.

Food and supplies

Stock up in Canyon before entering. There may be a seasonal shop in the park, but do not depend on it. Canyon’s square has a few cafés and restaurants.

History

The Comanche and Kiowa knew this land long before Texas ranchers. In 1874, the US Army’s attack in the canyon helped end the Red River War. Charles Goodnight then founded the JA Ranch here in 1876. The artist Georgia O’Keeffe, who taught in Canyon in the 1910s, loved the place too.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Palo Duro really the second-largest canyon in the US?

It is commonly described that way. Ranking canyons depends on how you measure them, but its scale is undeniable.

How hard is the Lighthouse Trail?

It is mostly moderate, with a steep final section. The main danger is heat rather than terrain.

Can I visit as a day trip from Amarillo?

Yes, it is only about 30 minutes away.

Are there organised tours?

Hardly any. We could confirm one horseback ride on GetYourGuide; everything else is self-guided.
